Observation of Release Behavior and Porosity of Sacran - Chitosan Hydrogel

Abstract

|
We prepared sacran - chitosan hydrogels by using condensation reaction between amine group of chitosan and carboxyl group of sacran. Release behavior and change in porosity of hydrogels were observed by mass loss, FT-IR, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and SEM analysis in DW, 0.01M NaCl and CaCl2 solutions for 28days. 33%, 37%, and 39% of mass loss in DW, NaCl and CaCl2 solutions were observed for 28days, respectively. As results of mass loss and FT-IR analysis, chitosan was released from the hydrogel and release behavior of chitosan could be affected by Na+ and Ca2+ ion in solutions. Porosity of hydrogels in DW, NaCl and CaCl2 solutions were decreased in the order of DW, NaCl, and CaCl2 solutions. SEM analysis showed that hydrogels had porous layered structures. Shrinkage of layered structure of hydrogels due to release of chitosan in DW, NaCl and CaCl2 solutions resulted in decrease of porosity in spite of the decrease in mass loss of hydrogel in NaCl and CaCl2 solutions.
